How to lose weight while walking

Published Date: April 5th, 2013

For newcomers to the gym, the prospect of joining more avid runners in the rows of TRUE Fitness treadmills may be intimidating. But even if you don't enjoy running, you can use a quality fitness treadmill to help you burn fat and lose weight by walking.

Walking is an especially great option if you have an injury and don't have access to a treadmill like the TRUE M50, which is designed to reduce stress on your ankles, knees, hips and back. If you want to take it easy on your joints and lose weight in the process, follow these walking tips:

1. Walk during your lunch hours

Don't make the mistake of thinking that a short lunch break means that you won't have time to exercise. According to Fitness magazine, experts estimate that burning a mere 50 extra calories a day can help determine whether or not you gain weight. You can easily burn that number of calories by taking a 15-minute walk over lunch.

2. Wear a pedometer

Try wearing a pedometer to find out how much you're walking outside of the gym. You need to aim for 10,000 steps a day to lose weight, according to Livestrong, and most people cover between 900 and 3,000 steps by simply going about their daily routine. Spend a quick half hour on the treadmill and you'll be well on your way to 10,000!

3. Mix it up

If you really want your walking routine to be effective, keep your muscles guessing by changing it every day. If you took a quick 15-minute power walk over lunch on Monday, go for a leisurely 45-minute walk with your dog on Tuesday. You can even add in a few "walking lunges" or play with your pace to increase the number of calories that you burn.
